In coversation with Suraj Mani & The Tattva Trip
Suraj Mani & The Tattva Trip is performing LIVE at Bluefrog, Pune on 10th Aug. We managed to get an exclusive one on one with the main man, a little ahead of the gig. So read on and get set for The Tattva Trip!
Tell us a little bit about you musical journey.
It's been a real trip so far. I started out singing bcos I was ragged in Engineering college, walked into a restaurant and ended up jamming and fronting a band that attained fame as mother jane, became one of the top Indie acts in India and Asia, ruptured my spine and gave up all that, started playing the acoustic guitar in 2012, wrote & composed new songs (55 and counting), went the songwriter route, found new bandmates who make my trip beautiful and I have dreams that I'm scared to say out loud bcos people will think I want too much! So yes, you’ve just seen the tip of the iceberg.
Tell us a little bit about the Tattva Trip.
The Tattva Trip is a social movement that comes alive in songs and stories. Our show format involves presenting a transformative musical journey through the songs and stories of a symbolic traveller.
Tell us one memorable experience of a gig that you once attended.
I’ll tell you a recurring one that I’ve experienced over the years as an independent rock artist. I’ll be going to the airport on the college organised cab and the driver will say, “sir, I don’t normally like rock music, but I really enjoyed your gig last night” . You know what, I should probably start recording these messages and put it up for all the programming guys to prove a point of how powerful music is and how it transcends language, economic positions and regions.
Which performance of yours, has left a mark on your memory?
Once did a gig for some 200 odd young kids who had AIDS. After they got over their initial shock of hearing loud rock music, they really got into it and I had kids dancing on stage and climbing my shoulders during the performance. At the end of the gig, amidst all the hundreds of hugs one kid of maybe 5 or 6 came up to me and said, God bless you, uncle. I still choke when I think of that. And I bless my stars that I’m in a position where I can make thousands of people happy in an hour. That’s a great job and some real good karma.
What can we expect from your gig at Pune?
We strive to move audiences both on emotional and intellectual levels and right now, our sound is very textural and groovy. A lot of it has to do with the personalities of the people in The Tattva Trip and I’m loving the vibe that I have with Naveen Thomas, Dinkar Nayak & John Melvin. You can expect favorites from Motherjane and The Tattva Trip and we will reveal the set list on 9th of August on our Official Facebook page :). Or maybe you’d prefer to be surprised?
What kind of music have you been listening to recently?
Thaikuddam Bridge (Navarasam/Brilliant Album), Barefaced Liars (Mind over Matter/Brilliant album), Black letters, Parvaaz & Peepal Tree.
One dream collaboration?
Mark Knopfler playing guitar on one of my songs. Aah!
If you are in Pune this Wednesday then don't forget to head on over to Bluefrog for a magical trip.
